Staar® Toric IOL

For the best option to correct cataracts and also correct for astigmatism, the doctors of Buckley Chang Eye Institute choose the Staar Toric IOL for their patients. The Staar Toric IOL is the very first lens approved by the FDA for its effectiveness, safety and reliability.  Composed of stable, flexible silicone and acrylic, this lens is all one piece designed specifically for people suffering with astigmatism.

Astigmatism is caused by a misshapen cornea. Cataracts occur within the lens of the eye, so during cataract surgery, the lens is removed and a new intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted. If the IOL is a standard, monofocal IOL, then the patient will still experience sight with astigmatism because the cornea is still misshapen.

Utilizing the same technology as contacs, the Staar Toric IOL can now correct for astigmatism, allowing for crisp, clear vision.

The Staar Toric IOL is implanted during a simple outpatient cataract procedure. The eye will be numbed in order for our surgeon to make a small incision on the edge of the cornea. Once the incision has been made the natural eye lens is removed and the Staar Toric IOL is put into place without any discomfort. Most patients will return for a post-op visit the day after surgery for a follow-up.

Cataract surgery patients often have a short recovery time. Most normal activities can be performed immediately after surgery but our doctors will discuss with you any activities that you should wait before doing. We will also provide you with instructions for the healing process.

Every surgical procedure presents some risks for the patients. With the Staar Toric IOL there generally the same risks that are associated with all intraocular lenses. Our surgeons will be able to determine if Staar Toric IOL is right for you and if there are any risks or complication that you should be made aware of before surgery.
