Buckley Chang Eye Institute believes in only using the very best technology for patient's eyes. The doctors of Buckley Chang Eye Institute have decided to use Crystalens® AO, the first aberration-free accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) with aspheric optics, to improve the vision of their patients. Crystalens has a proven track record and with the improvements of the Crystalens AO (the only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens), patient's vision should only improve.

The new design of the Crystalens AO contains zero spherical aberrations, which allows for the enhancement of the depth of field. It is designed to improve retinal image quality without compromising depth of field and therefore provides greater quality of distance and intermediate vision.

With the increase in the depth of focus, a person's near vision can be improved without harming their intermediate to distance vision. The change in the surface of the lens has no negative impacted on dysphotopsia or night vision.

The Crystalens AO is implanted during a simple outpatient cataract procedure. The eye will be numbed in order for the surgeon to make a small incision on the edge of the cornea. Once the incision has been made the natural eye lens is removed and the Crystalens AO is put into place without any discomfort. Most patients will return to visit their doctor the day after surgery for a follow-up.

Cataract surgery patients often have a short recovery time. Most normal activities can be performed immediately after surgery but your doctor will discuss with you any activities that you should wait before doing. The doctor will also provide you with instructions for the healing process, ie. eye drops and instructions to keeping the eye in good health while it heals.

Every surgical procedure presents some risks for the patients. With the Crystalens AO there generally the same risks that are associated with all intraocular lenses. The Crystalens AO has a smaller optic compare to most stand IOL, therefore glare and other visual disturbances may occur in certain lighting conditions. Your surgeon will be able to determine if Crystalens AO is right for you and if there are any risks or complication that you should be made aware of before surgery.
